What exactly is at stake?

What consideration have you given to how your dog’s behaviour could be affecting your life? How many social situations does it (or you) miss out on because of it?

Which situations are made needlessly difficult? Walking down the street, having guests over to your house, or going to the local cafe - these occasions shouldn't be a battle with your dog.

If you have a new puppy, what are the potential ramifications of not providing the early learning foundations it will need to live well in your family and wider society?

Ironically, dog trainers would be out of business if every puppy was trained properly from the start.

The terrible truth is that thousands of dogs are abandoned or put down every year in Australia. Often this is simply because owners feel confused and overwhelmed by:

  1. Where to even begin with training a new dog, or
  2. How they should fix their dog's behaviour problems.

Countless more "problem" dogs are hidden away from friends and family, or miss out on daily exercise because of their owner's frustration, embarrassment and lack of dog training knowledge.

Something as simple as intense leash-pulling during walks can be overwhelming for pet owners.

Even worse, many dogs are put on heavy sedative drugs, because owners have been given poor advice and told to take the seemingly easy route.

Common issues include:

  • Pulling on the leash during walks
  • Jumping up on people
  • Digging
  • Refusing to come when called (e.g. at the dog park)
  • Resource guarding (food, toys etc)
  • Separation anxiety
  • Unwanted barking
  • Destructive chewing of household items
  • Aggression/reactivity towards people and/or other dogs

These are among the main issues faced by dog owners. Often, such problems can be traced back to the dog’s first four months of life. Your puppy’s critical socialisation period closes sharply at 16 weeks of age.

It must have a wide variety of social experiences before this time. Think of these experiences like "puppy bingo" - and this must include meeting other dogs.

Yes, your dog must meet other (vaccinated, healthy) dogs even before its vaccination schedule is completed. The risk of catching any diseases is far outweighed by the risk of poor socialisation leading to behavioural issues later. Many progressive vets now acknowledge this more modern advice.

Remember this - a lack of proper early socialisation causes more problems than just about anything else.

Often the shelter dogs who are sold as "abused" to their adoptive parents are more likely to have had a lack of early experiences, causing issues later on.

Where should you begin?

Most people are unsure where to begin with dog training - and it's no wonder, with endlessly confusing information on the internet. It can feel like a minefield of marketing, technical jargon and conflicting opinions.

Search Google for "dog training" and you'll get around three billion results. Countless rabbit holes of Youtube videos, blog posts and Instagram profiles - all leading in different directions.

Add to this the fact that dog training is completely unregulated. When choosing a trainer, we would encourage you to check if, where, and what they studied.

Luke is completing the National Dog Trainers' Federation (NDTF) Certificate 3 in Dog Behaviour and Training, a nationally recognised course. He was taught by Glenn Cooke, dog industry veteran with over 30 years' experience, and the general manager of Australia's largest dog boarding & training company.

Real dog training, real results

Established in 1993, the NDTF is Australia's only government-approved provider for professional dog trainers. The NDTF does not push any ideology or dictate training methods to its students, allowing them and their clients to think for themselves, using balanced dog training techniques.

I use 95-99% positive-reinforcement based training - typically in the form of food, play, and verbal praise. The remaining 1-5% is gentle and fair use of guiding leash pressure to show the dog both what we do want and also do not want in terms of behaviours. The leash is our communicator with the dog; our common language.

Typically we will train puppies on a harness and then progress to either a martingale collar or slip leash when the dog reaches 4-5 months of age.

Since 2019 Luke has co-hosted Life With Your Dog Podcast.

With hundreds of episodes of pet-related discussion topics and interviews with dog training industry experts from across the globe, you can start your educational journey in the world of dogs.

We are here to help.

We get it. Experiencing problem behaviours in your dog can be very frustrating. The good news is, the vast majority of cases can be helped with structured dog training.

For those with a new puppy, ask yourself: What are the possible consequences if your puppy doesn't have the learning foundations it needs to have a happy and fulfilling life in your family and broader society?

You no doubt have a laundry list of questions as long as your arm. Raising a young puppy is no easy task.
